Our History

The Greater Mt. Nebo Baptist Church was established in 1942 by Rev. C.L. McKenzie in Boerne, Texas.  In 1962 the church moved to Muskogee Street in San Antonio Texas.  In 1963 the church was reorganized and moved to 1302 North Sabinas Street where Rev. McKenzie pastored until 1990 when he was called home to be with the Lord.

After the death of Rev. McKenzie, Rev. Nick Jackson pastored for a while until his health failed and he was called home. Rev. Nelson McKenzie replaced Rev. Jackson as pastor of West Mount Nebo Baptist Church until his death.

For several years after Rev. Nelson McKenzie death, West Mount Nebo did not have a pastor but waited on God to send a leader. Several ministers served in the capacity of feeding the flock until December 2000.

In December 2000 the late sister Rosa Jeffrey requested of Rev. C. L. Bias if he would send a preacher for a limited amount of Sundays.  Rev. Bias sent Rev. Walter Cornelious.  The congregation unanimously decided that this was who the church was waiting for to serve as their pastor.

Pastor Cornelious became the church permanent pastor in April 2003 and has served as the pastor since that time.  In 2014 the Church became affiliated with the newly formed Alamo District Full Gospel Baptist Association, with founding Bishop Paul S. Morton. Since that time Mount Nebo has undergone major renovation and reconstruction under Pastor Cornelious' leadership.

The Church is focusing on making sure that the souls of men, women, boys, and girls are saved.  Not just the unchurched, but also those who have been in church most of their lives.  Mount Nebo is a place where people can receive the uncompromising preaching and teaching of the Word of God.  Under Pastor Walter Cornelious and Co-Pastor Willie Mae Cornelious leadership, coupled with much prayer and the leading of the Holy Spirit,  Mount Nebo Worship Center has become a church that is flourishing both spiritually and naturally.  For they truly believe the word of God that says; "...Upon this rock I will build my church: and all the powers of hell shall not prevail against it." Matthew 16:18 (The Living bible).
